Aims
The basic aim of the programme is to give
the students both theoretical knowledge in the field of AI and practical
skills in applying the AI techniques in a wide range of IT areas. More
specifically the programme offers training in the following sub-areas of
AI:

Foundations of AI

Knowledge Representation

Planning and Search
-
Natural Language Processing
-
Vision - Machine Learning
-
Neural Networks
-
Knowledge-Based Systems (Expert Systems, Intelligent
Tutoring Systems etc.)

Opportunities
AI is an interdisciplinary area. It both uses
the results of various fields and influences their further development.
Recently AI methods and techniques are used almost everywhere by the IT
industry.
The successful graduates of the programme will
be able to apply their knowledge in research, development and educational
institutions in various areas as Knowledge-Based Systems, Image Processing,
Intelligent User Interfaces, Robotics, Data Mining, Intelligent Software
Engineering etc. The programme will equip the students for application
work in industry as well for Ph.D. research.

Prerequisites
The normal prerequisite for entry to the programme
is a B.Sc. degree or equivalent in Computer Science or Mathematics. Previous
experience in computer programming and knowledge in Logic and foundations
of Computing are highly desirable.

Staff
The programme is jointly organised by the
Faculty of Informatics - Sofia University and the Institute of Information
Technologies - Bulgarian Academy of Sciences. The course tutors are highly
qualified researches in their fields from both organisations and in some
cases outstanding foreign lecturers invited in the framework of existing
co-operation schemes (TEMPUS, INCO-Copernicus etc.).

Support
The programme is supplied with up-to-date
hardware and software products necessary for the course exercises and the
projects. A LAN of 6 SUN-Sparc workstations and a number of PCs are especially
assigned to the programme. A rich library of AI and related books and journals
is also provided.
