Understanding & Managing Finance for Early Years Managers
 

Statement of aims

To introduce the students to the language and techniques of formal accounting systems, to the point where they can understand and interpret the figures, highlighting important issues and differences from year to year.

To provide the students with essential management tools, to enable them to monitor performance and improve efficiency, work within constraints but at the same time exercise autonomy and control.

Synopsis

This module will examine concepts relevant to financial and resource management in organisations. You will study Basic Financial Statements together with techniques for analysing and evaluating them. You will look at the role of Working Capital, and how this can be managed successfully. Finally you will explore ideas on Costs, Budget Preparation and Budgetary Control, looking strategically at the Financial Aspects of Decision Making by the use of case studies and discussion together with summative assessments .

Learning Outcomes

By the end of this module you will be able to:

1. Analyse the role and limitations of financial statements, and evaluate their contents and their overall worth in relation to situations typically found in business organisations.
2. Understand the nature of working capital and the elements which comprise it; devise and evaluate policies which attempt to manage such working capital effectively.
3. Understand, devise and critically evaluate different budgetary techniques which might be used within different contexts relevant to the management of business organisations.
4. Evaluate the limitations of current techniques in managing financial resources, particularly in relation to ethical or environmental issues.
