The Trade Union Institute for Economic and Social Study and Research (ISERES) is a non-profit making organization created in 1978 by the General Confederation of Labour of France (CGT). ISERES carries out scientific research work to allow for better knowledge of socio-economic national and international realities, their movements and prospects. The areas on which it carries out its work can be both theoretical issues as well as specific aspects of the economy and society. ISERES research work is widely circulated within the CGT structures and is also at the disposal of the scientific community. To this end a list is published and distributed every four months. ISERES also organizes numerous symposiums and seminars which are an opportunity to put researchers and trade unionists in direct contact. Jean Luc Maletras
The General Confederation of Labour of France (CGT) celebrated its centenary in 1995. CGT membership amounts to 640,000 workers and during the last elections of labour delegates to industrial tribunals it was the most representative of all French trade union centres and received 33% of all votes. The CGT is made up of 32 professional unions (metalworkers, finance, construction, energy, textile etc.) which union branches join at company level, and of 95 regional inter-branch councils (based on the French ‘Departments’) which union branches join as well.
